New Course Explores Underpinnings of Hate and How to Respond to Rising Antisemitism

This fall, Rabbi Shmuly Altein of Chabad-Lubavitch in Winnipeg will offer a new four-session course from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), titled Outsmarting Antisemitism.

Using history, Talmudic sources, Jewish mysticism, and contemporary expert analysis, the course addresses some of the niggling questions we grapple with as individuals and as a community. Why does antisemitism persist? How can we make hate go away? How can we counter Israel-focused antisemitism and prevent our own youth from unwittingly lending their voices to antisemitic agendas?

Many Jews are anxious about rising antisemitism today and worry about how to respond to it, Rabbi Shmuly Altein, the local JLI instructor in Winnipeg, told Read More »

Winnipeg to Join Worldwide Release of Well-Connected

A new course for women, Well-Connected: It’s Not What You Know. It’s What You Do, explores how while we often think a faith is a core set of beliefs surrounded by ceremony, Judaism is, in fact, less a system of belief than a system of action.

This December, the Rosh Chodesh Society (RCS)—the women’s division of the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI)—launches its latest course, Well-Connected, slated to run in over 220 locations across the globeIn this seven-part seriesWell-Connected examines how the dos and don’ts reveal the soul of Jewish ritual life and how each deed connects us to something far beyond ourselves. From the mysteries of the mezuzah and the kosher diet to… Read More »

Learn To Read Hebrew Before The High Holidays

According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, only half of American Jews (52%) can read Hebrew. To fill this gap in Jewish education, the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) has developed Read it in Hebrew, an innovative Hebrew reading course that is sweeping the Jewish world. With interactive flashcards and its own mobile app for remote learning, Read it in Hebrew utilizes the latest technology to combine timeless learning methods with contemporary psychology for a course guaranteed to be effective in only five sessions.

“We are delighted to announce the debut of Read It In Hebrew this summer in Winnipeg. The popularity of RIIH (it’s been taught at over 600 locations across North America!) suggests that it meets a deeply-felt… Read More »

Waking Up To Life

Mendel Cotlar, a young but clearly intelligent, young man had one thing to say at his Bar Mitzvah in Houston, TX. “Gratitude makes you happy.” Developing an attitude of gratitude is crucial to remaining happy in our fast paced lives filled with crises and meetings. It is important to pause and appreciate how much we have to be thankful for, even when things seem to be going wrong.

These ideas are the foundation of a groundbreaking new seminar from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, entitled Waking Up to Life. As its title implies, the 90 minute workshop is designed to change the way we appreciate our lives by focusing on what we have for some time each morning. The ancient Jewish practice of reciting the Modeh Ani is a… Read More »

New Course Takes Students On Virtual Tour Of Ancient Jerusalem

Two thousand years later, Jews still converge upon the Western Wall, the surviving remnant of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. However, while many have explored the politics and geography of Israel and the Temple Mount, few have explored the spiritual significance of the structures that stood on that mount for a millennium. This summer, the Jewish Learning Institute is proud to unveil Heaven on Earth, a three-week interactive course that recreates the ancient Temples from the ground up.

"Many people wonder why the Western Wall is so important to Jewish people, why it is so close to our hearts,” explains Rabbi Shmuly Altein, outreach director at the Jewish Learning Centre. “This summer, course participants will have the… Read More »
