The Chabad.org Family Mourns the Loss of Rabbi Shmuly Altein
The Jewish world is reeling from the loss of Rabbi Shmuly Altein, who dedicated his life to teaching Torah and lighting up souls in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was just 43 years old and had fought a courageous years-long battle with illness.
Rabbi Shmuly’s father, Rabbi Avrohom Altein, serves on Chabad.org’s senior rabbinic review team, where his attention to detail, wealth of knowledge, and down-to-earth wisdom have been a boon to our readers in ways few would ever know.
Shortly after Rabbi Shmuly’s marriage to Adina Duchman in 2007, the couple moved to Winnipeg, where Shmuly’s parents have served as Chabad emissaries since 1972.
Working hand in hand with his parents, Rabbi Shmuly introduced a slew of educational and community programs, greatly enhancing Jewish life in the city, culminating in the 2010 opening of the glistening new Lubavitch Learning Centre.
Yet more important than buildings were the souls he touched. Each encounter, each class, and each mitzvah was done with a smile, sincerity, and love.
When illness struck, the Alteins relocated to Wesley Hills, New York, for treatment, with their five young children. There, Rabbi Altein continued teaching, inspiring, and uplifting others, notably in the Baal Shem Tov Shul.
Please join the Chabad.org Family in expressing our condolences to Rabbi Avrohom and Brocha Altein, their children, grandchildren, and the entire Altein and Duchman families.
May G‑d comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem!
Please feel free to leave your condolences in the discussion section below, which will be shared with the family.
May we share only good news,
